"Kwado" ~ Dress up

How Getting Ready Became My Daily Ritual of Confidence

A journey into the deeper meaning of getting dressed

There's a word in Igbo that perfectly captures something I've always felt but could never quite articulate: Kwado.

It means "to dress up" or "to get ready," but like so many words rooted in culture and tradition, it carries a weight that goes far beyond its literal translation. Kwado isn't just about putting on clothes. It's about preparation. Intention. The quiet, powerful act of showing up for yourself before you show up for the world.

More Than Just Getting Dressed

.

I used to think of getting ready as a chore—something to rush through on the way to what really mattered. Pick an outfit. Apply some makeup. Go. But somewhere along the way, I realized I had it backward. The getting ready was what mattered.

Every morning, when I stand in front of my closet, I'm not just choosing clothes. I'm choosing how I want to feel. Confident. Comfortable. Put-together. Ready for whatever the day throws at me—whether that's a big presentation, an unexpected lunch meeting, or simply the courage to take up space in my own life.

That's the power of kwado. It transforms a mundane routine into a ritual of self-respect.

The Ritual of Showing Up

In our grandmothers' time, getting ready was never rushed. There was ceremony to it. The careful wrapping of a gele. The selection of just the right wrapper. The application of ori or shea butter as both skincare and blessing. These weren't just beauty routines—they were moments of preparation, grounding, and stepping into one's power.

Somewhere between then and now, we lost some of that intentionality. We started treating getting dressed as an obstacle between us and our to-do lists, rather than as the foundation that makes everything else possible.

But what if we reclaimed it?

My Morning Kwado Practice

Here's what my kwado ritual looks like now:

5 minutes of silence before I open my closet. I don't check my phone. I don't start making mental to-do lists. I just breathe and ask myself: How do I want to feel today?

Choosing with intention, not obligation. I've built a wardrobe of pieces that make me feel like myself—versatile, high-quality, and effortlessly elegant. No more struggling with clothes that don't fit right or make me feel "off." When everything in your closet is something you love, getting dressed becomes a joy, not a decision spiral.

The final look in the mirror. This is the moment where I see it all come together. Not just the outfit, but the woman wearing it. Confident. Ready. Living her style.

Creating Your Own Kwado Ritual

You don't need an elaborate wardrobe or hours to spend getting ready. Kwado is about quality over quantity, intention over perfection. Here's how to start:

  1. Simplify your wardrobe. Keep only pieces that make you feel confident and comfortable. If you're constantly second-guessing an item, let it go.
  2. Invest in versatility. Choose pieces that work across multiple areas of your life—from work to weekend, office to evening. When your clothes are as multifaceted as you are, getting dressed becomes effortless.

  3. Make it a moment, not a rush. Even if you only have 10 minutes, approach those 10 minutes with presence. This is your time to prepare, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally.

  4. Trust your instinct. You know what makes you feel good. Honor that, even if it doesn't follow the trends or fit someone else's idea of "professional" or "appropriate."

The Woman Who Kwados

The woman who practices kwado doesn't wait for special occasions to show up beautifully. She doesn't save her best pieces for "someday." She understands that every day is worthy of intention, care, and presence.

She's the woman who walks into a room and commands attention without demanding it. The woman who can transition seamlessly from a board meeting to dinner with friends because her style—and her confidence—goes with her wherever she goes.

She's elegant without being overdressed. Comfortable without being casual. She's rooted in heritage while being thoroughly modern.

She's living her style.

Beyond the Clothes

Here's what I've learned: Kwado isn't really about fashion at all. It's about self-worth. It's about honoring yourself enough to prepare, to show up, to be present in your own life.

When you kwado, you're saying: I'm worth this care. I'm worth this attention. I'm worth showing up for.

And once you start showing up for yourself that way? Everything else falls into place..
